  Persia, 1902 Provisional Typeset Issue of Teheran (8 frames)

  This exhibit studies the 1902 typeset issues of Teheran. Due to the depletion of the stock of stamps printed by Enschedé of Holland and lack of funds to order a new stock, Pharos printing firm in Teheran was commissioned to produce a set of typeset stamps using regular newspaper printing method. The basic stamp was handstamped at the office of the General Director of Posts with a controlling overprint to validate their usage. These stamps were used throughout the country from early 1902 until mid 1903 at which time the new issue arrived from Enschedé.

  This exhibit documents uses of registration label as 1 chahi postage stamp during the period 1894 to 1912. The first registration label used in Persia was charged at 1 chahi each. When there was a shortage of low value postage stamp, this registration label was used as a 1 chahi postage stamp.

  Charity Tax Issues of...

  Persia, The Charity Tax Issues of 1918-1921

  The purpose of this exhibit is to study the charity tax stamps of Persia issued and used between 1918 and 1921. The famine started with the drought and poor harvest in 1917, but it spread and was prolonged due to effects of World War I and occupation of north western region of Persia. In order to help the needy and raise relief fund, a compulsory tax in the form of the charity stamps were issued in the capital, Tehran, as well as the major north western cities of Rasht, Khoy and Tabriz, which were hit hardest by the famine. The tax was levied on letters, telegraph, parcel post receipts, and legal documents.

  Picture Postcard Tax...

  Picture Postcard Tax of 1903-1908

  In early 1900’s privately printed picture postcards made their way to Persia. Some of these imported postcards showed nude or semi-nude women. The French postcards showing nude North African and Arabic women were the ones that finally caused the uproar within the religious community. They demanded a total ban on all picture postcards but as a compromise the postal authority issued the following order dated November 1903: “Certain persons have imported and placed on sale in Persia, picture postcards of unveiled Persian women. This is contrary to our religion and all post offices are to confiscate any cards of this character that they may find. Moreover, in order to prevent abuse, all persons who are dealing picture postcards other than those placed on sale by the Central Postal Administration at Teheran must submit their cards to the Central Postal Administration at Teheran who will apply a control mark on those approved. Any card not bearing this mark will not be allowed through the post. A tax of 2 Chahis per card will be charged on application for the control. The control will be applied at the Central Post Office. The Minister of Customs and Posts, Y. Hans” The tax was in place until June 1908 at which time the postal authority removed the tax.
